A day in the life of a Japanese Producer: Part 2Vote Now!

Ben Judd, Tuesday 06-24-2008, 10:27:14

So here we are in another fun-filled blog post starring your favorite sexy localizing Producer Ben Judd.

1.00PM - 5:30PM  -- There will invariably be 3 things that happen during this time frame:

A) I will answer another 30 - 50 E-mails which is hastening me down the "carpal-tunnel" to arthritis land.

B) I will have a meeting* about an event (E3, Leipzig, TGS, etc), a team meeting with the Japanese design guys who are helping me out on the games, or I will have a company meeting in which most of the heads of each division and producers give status updates on what they are working on.

C) I will write a blog post (if there is time). What makes matters worse is that I am blogging on our community site, on the Capcom-unity site, and writing a Japanese blog on the Capcom Japan Bionic Commando site.

The other day John D over at our US office asked if I wanted to start blogging on the Sony PlayStation blog. I told him that I unfortunately didn't have the bandwidth so he will be doing that in my stead.

*POWER TIP: For anyone who has worked in Japan you will know that meetings are a curse that you cannot escape. I attend about 2-3 hours of meetings each day and it really cuts into productivity. It wouldn't be so bad, if there was a lot to learn but unfortunately most of these meetings boil down to having one person read through a Powerpoint document that you received 3 days earlier via e-mail. I've already read though it and know it so why am I spending an hour to have another grown man read it back to me? Ah, this place teaches you some real patience!

4.00PM  -- At 4PM, Grin has begun their day so the e-mails start pouring in. Now the game is afoot. I begin to tell myself that the only way to get home at a decent hour is if I am able to nail all early issues from Grin by about 7PM. However, around this time I go back to the toilet if I can find one open*. I forgot to mention that all the toilets here have a blower and a bidet function. If you haven't tried shooting a jet-stream of cold water up your *bass* then you don't know what you are missing. This is one area the French got it right!

*POWER TIP: Did you know that Capcom's luxurious bathroom has no air conditioning? During the incredibly hot and humid summer, sitting on the pot feels like you are imprisoned in some kind of torture sweat-box designed to make you divulge company secrets. I swear, your average man could not survive 24 hours in a Capcom toilet!

5:30PM  -- On days when we are recording a podcast, Gearoid goes downstairs to set up the equipment. I usually have left-over work or help him out. On days that we are not recording a podcast, I go back upstairs to the 16th floor to play more Street Fighter Alpha 3 with my Localization brethren. Unfortunately that involves taking the elevator. If I were going to complain about one thing other than the bathroom, it would be the elevator. We have 4 main elevators for the entire building which houses 800 or so R&D people. Right before work, lunch, and after work getting one of these puppies is near impossible. I have waited for about 10 minutes for an elevator once. It was insane. Additionally, there is no air conditioning in the elevator and since everyone doesn't want to wait for the next one, they are packed with people! Hot, smelly, and never there when you need them.

6.00PM  -- After I get my fill of SF3A, I go back to work. Sometimes this involves a phone call to GRIN for about an hour but usually if I am lucky and not in crunch I can get out of the building by 8PM.

8.00PM  -- If we are crunching or have recorded a podcast, Gearoid and I will usually go out and grab something to eat. Usually there is really only one option:

Tori kizoku (Royal Family of Chicken)  -- Everything on the menu is fairly tasty, costs only 280 yen (roughly 2 dollars and 60 cents) and the service is good. If you ever find yourself in Osaka, look for one of these. We recommend: the beer, cheese and mochi potato cakes, the world-famous chicken breast pot-stickers, and of course the tandoori chicken ceasar salad.

8.00PM - 10PM  -- If we have grabbed some dinner together, then I usually stumble home around 10 or 11. If I have continued to work until 10 or 11 due to a big crunch, I usually stumble home (from exhaustion not alcohol) around the same time. On days where neither of these happens I try to go to the gym. It's called the Konami Sports Club* and it is actually run by the video company of the same name. Surprisingly enough, it's quite nice and I usually spend about 2 hours there doing a combination of weights, jogging, and biking.

*POWER TIP: Did you know that Ben Judd always wears Capcom-logoed shirts when he is working out at Konami and secretly feels like he is "winning points" in the Capcom/Konami rivalry? (Although he does love Konami games as well)

11.00PM - 2AM  -- I usually get home around this time after a hard day's work and watch some US TV that I have downloaded (I miss my US culture). Sometimes I will throw down some Warcraft 3 if the mood grabs me. But one other thing that I usually find myself doing is checking more e-mail from home. Grin is usually wrapping up their day so if there are any last minute discussions that I need to have, this is my only chance to do so. After midnight e-mails from the US begin to flow in and I try to get through as many of those as I can in a short amount of time.

After it's all said and done, I have usually been able to throw down a TV show or 2 and play 2 or so games of Warcraft 3. Not a lot of free time really but I can't complain because I'm making my dream game, right?

So, that's all it takes to be a big-shot producer at a Japanese company. Hope it was a refreshing look at a company you have probably only seen from a far. We will try to get you other "diaries" from other people on the team as time goes on.

Cheers,

Ben

I would be sorry for you...

But I'm afraid if you took it easier we would never play BCR and BC. So don't EVER relax. You should sleep less, even.
And what about that Nathan action figure I saw in one of those game blogs?
And thanks for the hard work and general awesomeness.

Please Consider

BIONIC COMMANDO TEAM PLEASE READ!

Please don't screw up the gorgeous scenery of the Bionic Commando sequel with those intrusive flashing button control displays that I've seen on screen in the latest multiplayer and greenhouse videos. If I dedicate X amount of hours to the game, I don't need anything in the top right corner telling me what button I need to press to punch or jump. I would absolutely hate to have such a nuisance in what seems to be an incredibly skillful and addictive game. Please at least provide the option to turn off those control displays.

(I'll be posting this all over this site and forums. Please consider this if you haven't.)

Goin' back to Cali

This is straight out of left field but here goes. Quit yer bitchin' Ben, grab Gearoid, John, Miguel, Simon and some of the other GRIN folk and move out to Cali because I've noticed that 2KMarin is looking for a new production team for Bioshock 2. With all those combined talents the consumers could have another game of the year (2009, most likely). You guys are probably almost finished with the BC's anyhoo so get after it. Rad Spencer's a chump, the Big Daddy's would put a forking screw in him. I just want to see Master D's head explode. Out.

Sleep

Damn dood, that picture isn't very flattering. Looks like you could really use some sleep. Last thing I want to do is load up Kotaku and read headline BIONIC COMMANDO PRODUCER PASSES OUT AT KONAMI GYM; LACK OF SLEEP? OR INSUFFERABLE CAPCOM TOILET VENTILATION?

I can sleep when I'm dead...

But if I do die, hopefully it won't be in the Konami Sports Club and certainly not in our sweat-box toilets from hell. Thanks for the support guys. Here are some quickie responses:

cubanmage@yahoo.com -- I'll talk it over with the team. Some of those icons may be something that you can remove off the screen. Much to Grin's credit, the wanted to provide maximum visibility on the HUD and keep it as minimal as possible but the Capcom Japan design staff said we needed it for people with only an average amount of gaming skill.

rapskallion -- I do love the California whether... and American pizza! And shakes! And pancakes! But, alas, there is something about the magic of living in Japan. I'm not quite done here yet. Maybe in the future though... We'll have to see how BC does first. Eyes on the prize right!

silverfox64/hyakitaki -- You really have no idea just how hard the secret setting is on BCR. And certainly finding all the hidden items and beating all the "hidden challenge rooms". It just aint gonna happen. This game will chew you up, spit you out, and leave you crying on the floor screaming for mommie. A direct quote from one of the artists on the team: "We should make the secret difficulty so hard that you cannot beat it".

He was probably joking... PROBABLY!

Ben

LOL

That's hilarious! If it's as hard as you say, I have no doubt in my mind that this is my kinda game. Honestly haven't played a challenging game in years!

They don't make em like they used to...and that is why this game is going to be an epic masterpiece.. Old school difficulty with new school everything. My GOTY

-Haven't broken a controller since my Super NES and GENESIS dayz. Maybe this game will give me a reason to break somethn..lol

I know of this secret difficulty. There's a video of a presentation at DigiDays/Wondercon where some poor soul from Capcom is booed for not selecting it (Ben, is that you?).

I WILL beat the ultra mega super hard difficulty. I better get like.. a bajillion gamerscore points for it if it's that hard. :V Some of us relish hardness and challenge. Mostly because we've beaten the original so many times we have muscle memory on how to beat the stages. So bring on this stab-my-eyes-out hard difficulty. We will conquer it!

We shall see, Mr. Judd. We shall see. If the game is truly "stab your eyes out" hard on the hardest difficulty, I applaud it, because very few games do that these days. It actually gives me something to shoot for.

Barrels

I tracked down the video mentioned by dvincent above and noticed something I hadn't before. The barrels seem too powerful! When you lift up a barrel: you remove the enemies' cover, block shots with it, then bowl over everyone in sight. Is barrel-lifting a game-breaker? Imagine if Mario could lift DK's barrels; the game would be a joke! Could you enlighten us on the art of barrel balancing (in terms of gameplay balance, not the stuff you learn in Clown College)?

Barrels

@CarmineMac - Trust me, we thought of this as well. First off there aren't a lot of barrels in the game so it is alright if they are one-roll-kills. Also, you always have the risk of trying to pull the barrel up which takes a good second or two. While doing so you can get shot so although there is a reward there is also a risk. Finally, while you hold the barrels you are actually quite slow when you move and if you get surrounded you will probably get shot which makes you drop the barrel.

Bottom line: It's pretty balanced

Barrels... and more secret difficulty banter

That's what it seemed like in most of the videos I've seen, where the barrels come into play. Thinking logically, it'd be rough on Rad to carry a bionic arm, a gun, and a barrel all at the same time. Kind of hard to juggle all of that.

Secret difficulty eh? I sense some achievement possibilities. Or could it be so difficult, so strenuous of a video gaming task, so "I Wanna Be The Guy" hard that any achievement pales in comparison of how tough the difficulty really is?

The hardest part of the secret difficulty is that we aren't playing it right now. :P

Great Insight

Hey Ben,

I really enjoyed reading your posts. I have been wondering what it was like working over in Japan recently, because I will be moving there with my wife in 2009 more than likely, because of an expansion in the company she works for.
We will be living in Tokyo near the Ginza district for a year I believe. I work in the Game industry as 3d artist, and was wondering... Would it be better to do contract work while I am there, or seek out employment with a company there? I was wondering what kind of opportunities might open up...and Do companies there have any need for american artists?

I have always loved 8 bit games, and Bionic commando is in my top five, so I am so excited for both of these games.

Thanks for keeping us updated so much, and good luck broseff!

Dave,

Glad I could shed some light on the Japanese working conditions. Of course it will always be different depending on the company but if you foresee yourself staying in the same company for 10 plus years you would probably be better in a company job but if you plan to bounce around a lot contractual work may be better.

To be honest, Japan really doesn't pay well and if you work for a company there will be some tough "pills" to swallow but there are always some really rewarding parts about working in Japan so unfortunately you will have to decide what works for you.

Yep, BC is a great game and without trying to brag too much, BCR really does move it forward in the right direction. I'm sure you will all walk away happy.

Hey Ben, thanks for such a quick response! You guys seem like the perfect match for this game, so I have no doubts! I would pay much more than 10 or 15 for rearmed and I will undoubtedly pick up the xbox sequel also.

I wish I could pick your brain a little more on the japanese work stuff, but I feel i might derail the post and I also know how busy you are. I had actually been looking you up on google and stuff(stalking) trying to see if you had mentioned things about working in japan, so I hit the freaking gold mine here ! haha.

So yeah one more quick question...if you dont mind.
Is there any special need for an American artist with any of the Japaneses companies? Any advantage to being american?

You have been immensely helpful, thanks again

Dave R
