Finally!!!

After jumping through internal hoops and contractual nonsense, we have finally been able to make the music from Bionic Commando Rearmed available for purchase (huge hi-five to the licensing team and to Frankie F for making this a reality).

I love the music. It's one of the best parts of Bionic Commando, and that's saying a lot. I particularly love the style that Simon adapted for Rearmed which seems to mix in the actual 8-bit chords with a more modern (relevant) back-beat. It's unlike any other remix styles that I have heard because the 8-bit beeps are actually in the music itself.

It really hits a sweet spot for me as a long-time gamer because it really has just enough retro with just enough new beats to make it work. We are still trying to implement the functionality into the website so that you can purchase songs directly from the music player but for those of you who cannot wait, please go to the following link:

https://www.sumthingdigital.com/AlbumDetails.aspx?albumid=3664

I'm told the songs should be on iTunes as well (this link will take you to the US iTunes store - your mileage may vary).

I know that once something hits the net it can be pirated very easily but I hope you can see the amount of time and money we have put forth to make this a reality. Just so that you don't see us as the evil corporation that is rolling in money and sticking it to the end-user, let me break down some costs:

We are charging 99 cents per song of which we usually make about 60% or so. That's 60 cents. Additionally there are server management fees, the internal staff hours it took to get the contract up and running, and of course a license fee to create the initial contract. All in all, it probably costs us around 10K just to get the product up and running. We would need to sell 15,000 songs to break even and when it comes to game soundtracks that just isn't a number that you can easily hit.

Odds are we will take a loss.

But still, I believe in the music. I believe in making it available to the fans. And I believe that you can't always look at the bottom line (although my boss disagrees).

So please, if you have been a fan of some of the stuff on the music player, check out the site. If you like what you hear, make your opinion count in the only way you can as a consumer -- vote with your dollars.

You should notice a few new songs on the list and I have got so say the "Rise of the Albatross" song (Area 12) is friggin fantastic! I myself wasn't even a fan of the original but without a doubt this is my favorite song on the list.

We've even included some nice bonus tracks for those who purchase the whole album like a special Capcom Japan created Area 01 piece so hopefully it will be something that you guys think is worth the money.

Vegas starts soon so hopefully this announcement will kick it off right!

Cheers,
Ben

There doesn't seem to be a way to buy the full album on the site? Just the first 12 tracks with the other 3 not for sale and no option to buy all.
I can't use itunes as my player doesn't support AAC.

Samples of the music sound great! :-D

Thanks guys! ...and a question for all you who purchased the whole album

Thanks guys for throwing down your hard earned cash so quickly for this. Like I mentioned in the post, I have been trying to get this thing live since about January or so! You wouldn't believe the nonsense that goes into trying to get something like this into the online retail channel!

But alas it does look like there are some kinks that need to be ironed out. The bonus tracks are only supposed to be available if you buy the whole soundtrack but as NunlanVonFuch mentioned there doesn't seem to be a buy soundtrack option on Sumthing Else's site. Additionally, the bonus tracks shouldn't be something you can individually buy on iTunes by they are. Ah well, we've never done anything like this before (with the exception of the Ace Attorney soundtrack in JPN) so there were bound to be some hiccups along the way.

Hey, I'm curious as one fan to another for those who have purchased the full soundtrack... what is your favorite track? I really didn't think I'd like the Rise of the Albatross track as much as I do. I literally listen to it every day!

I never played Bionic Commando and I haven't been listening to the music player on the site. But I bought the album because I like the podcast and I want to support you guys. I like the get-real, no-spin attitude and so I'm voting with my dollars.

PrimeStyle

Thanks a ton. Having someone like you who has never even played the original but is supporting our efforts by purchasing the soundtrack and listening to the podcast is really fantastic. It's one of the things community sites are supposed to be about and hopefully we won't steer you wrong! (And if we do, you can always let us know about it!)

It's funny, I was going to ask people to put up some iTunes reviews of the music when they got a chance but it looks like a couple people already beat me to the punch.

Thanks GUI J and KefkaFloyd! Very nice reviews!

No Prob

No prob Ben, I'm always happy to do reviews (kefkafloyd here). I totally nerdgasmed when I saw it this morning and my girlfriend didn't know how excited I would get over it... kinda scared her!

I am a big fan of "Rise of the Albatross." I did enjoy the Area 12 music from the first game, but this has really taken it to another level. I believe because the first part starts out slow and ambient, then comes in with the high tempo original beat. I'd have to say it's tied with Power Plant as my favorite. It's probably musically the best of the two, but Power Plant is just so awesome because I loved Area 8. Yeah, rose colored glasses and all that.

Power Plant is an excellent mix of area 8, and both the Area 1 and Area 5 tracks are excellent. The only track which is leaving me wanting is the area 2 one, oddly enough. Simon's take is a little more ambient, jazzy if you will, while I always imagined it as hard rockin. Kinda AC/DC. I feel like I would have arranged it differently. But it's definitely nice to listen to.

Also, to Gallow:

"I've been waiting for the complete soundtrack forever! I bought the entire soundtrack before my mind could even process the thought! I love the music, I'm just disappointed that there's no remix of the Albatross boss battle music."

It's there, actually, at the very end of the Rise of the Albatross track. Listen carefully, about 3:42 in. Simon left no stone unturned...

Also, Ben, you can do Album-only with iTunes, but I couldn't tell you how to do it. Sorry. But I've seen it before. They usually do it on really long tracks.

I would also like to know the synthesizers Simon used in this. There's a nice mixture of tones from that era that isn't just NES - I also get a Commodore SID vibe out of it. Given the European origin of GRIN I would not be surprised to hear that there's some SID influence.

But enough from me. Back to work I go! This will definitely sate the BC:R urge until it comes out. Keep up the good work.

Yo Ben!

Awesome job to you and the team for getting this soundtrack out. Been listening to it all morning at work! Managed to get a review of it up on iTunes but I guess they're still looking it over, since it hasn't been posted up yet.

Top 3 Tracks:
Heat Wave
BCR (Main Theme)
Power Plant

Oh and props on the podcast. Started listening to it yesterday, GREAT STUFF!

@dvincent747

Hm, the melody that starts at 3:42 in "Rise of the Albatross" is actually a melody that I wrote myself to make that tune a little longer without repeating the song once more.

The Albatross Theme from the original game is in BCR though - don't worry. I just didn't think it was long enough to justify its own track.

Glad y'all like the music! Warms my heart.

Good to know.

Thanks for the info, Simon. You're a music is fantastic, hopefully the same amount of talent will show in the game which I am dying to play.

Anyway, my favourite tracks are:

1)"Rise of the Albatross" which unlike Ben, I loved on the NES version as well only because I would always think of popping heads while hearing it.

2)"Leap of Faith" Without a doubt. It was my favourite track on the NES version and this one does it justice.

3)"Killt's hidden treasure" gives me goosehumps.

It was hard picking favourites since almost all of them are fantastic. The only one I would listen to the least is "OK We'll move".

Sumthing Digital - Fixed

Thanks for fixing it - full album ordered! I probably won't listen to it much until I play the game but after listening through the songs in the player here I am VERY impressed with the score. Oddly enough I've never played the original game but know some of the music courtesy of The Advantage who did a track called Bionic Commando-P.O.W. Camp which on the album here is called Amongst Allies.

"Hm, the melody that starts at 3:42 in "Rise of the Albatross" is actually a melody that I wrote myself to make that tune a little longer without repeating the song once more."

That may be my memory playing tricks on me. It just felt very familiar. The problem is that I don't have my Bionic Commando NSF at work so I couldn't take a quick listen to compare the two. It just felt like the Albatross theme was in the background there on that... baritone synth. But if it's in the game even better. Either way it's an awesome section.

So here on the North American site is where the party's at!
No love for the rest of the world (not even the UK)?

Anyway, so far I feel that something as odd as [OK, We'll move] is my one true favorite! Guess [Leap of Faith] is coming in on a close second.

Congrats on a great soundtrack that both fits the style of BCR and tickles my retro love. And perfect timing for the release date of this soundtrack and the thanks for the bonus tracks :D

Thank you SO MUCH for selling the soundtrack, even if at a loss. Music is generally one of my favorite parts of a game and when no soundtrack is available it makes me sad. To see a soundtrack for what is essentially an XBLA remake is heart-warming. Time to bust out the credit card...

Bionic Commando was the FIRST video game I ever owned. Opened even before my actual nes. I am still so in love with this game and have always loved the music. When Rearmed was first announced I went home, dug out the old dusty nes and a 19" tv, sat down and beat it twice.
I am so glad this game is coming out and is being polished to perfection, even if it means waiting.
This music will be on constant repeat for a while.
thanks so much
now all we need is a booklet, front and back and inlay covers and a disc label so i can make my own Physical version.

Thanks Dan. Believe it or not, I had pinged Ashcraft about the music a couple minutes before you did so we hit them about the same timing. Ashcraft said we had some "crazy" fans that had already mentioned it.

Keep that info rolling around to the different sites though! The more we can PR this puppy , the more we can get people to enjoy the Bionic Commando music goodness!

The rime of the ancient mariner

Hear the groans of the long dead seamen (haha)
See them stir and they start to rise
Bodies lifted by good spirits
None of them speak and they're lifeless in their eyes

The Albatross begins with its vengeance! What a great day 'mates! BCR soundtrack available and then Iron Maiden concert tonight going all retro as well!

....for all your hard work and dedication towards one of the greatest cult games of all time and making this remake in my opinion, a "game of the year" contender by just being a down loadable digital distribution.

By making just the music AAA, one must wonder...Damn, the game play, graphics/while in motion, bosses and all the extras have to be just as great. This game is going to be a masterpiece that easily could have been sold for double-even triple the amount asked for.

Thank you and your team again Ben for all your hard work and effort! The complete soundtrack is fuckn awesome!

Fantastic!

Guys, thanks for all your shout-outs about buying the soundtrack. Although it is my goal to bring the awesomeness that is Bionic Commando to the masses by making it a financial success, I would be lying if I didn't say that deep down inside, it's great to be able to share this kind of nerdy game love with some fellow fans.

I still jog and bike to the music almost every day and I have owned it for a month now. What a fantastic remake and what fantastic music to go with it. When you play the game, I have no doubt some of you will melt! It is so damn good.

And for any of you with some spare time, go over and review the soundtrack on iTunes. We already have quite a few reviews (thanks!) but a few more couldn't hurt!

Thank you

Huge thanks to Ben Judd, Simon Viklund, and everyone else involved in making this happen. I have to admit I haven't really listened a lot to the music on the site, but what I have heard has been really great. And hell, regardless of the quality of the music, you can't deny that this is great service!

Unfortunately I'm really short on cash at the moment, but rest assured I'll buy this as soon as I have the chance. I'm a huge fan of the Top Secret podcast, and through that I've become pretty damn hyped about pretty much every aspect of both the new BC and BCR. I can't wait to get BCR, and in the meantime I'm more than happy to give my money to you for something like this.

Although the music is of course worth it in its own right, I'm also really happy to be able to show my support for the superb job you've been doing with all the community stuff for this project. I really hope it'll result in great sales so you can convince the bigwigs at Capcom to do even more things like this, not to mention greenlight more games like BCR in the future. :)

I had the first Gameboy version and the color version, but those two were stolen from my home (which I plan to get again). I also have the Capcom Classics Mix for the GBA, which I only bought for Bionic Commando. That version is perfect on the GB Micro.

I've been lurking on this site awhile too, so I registered and bought the album. Just from listening to the online player and the videos, this can only be awesome. I'll definitely be looking for more BC memoriabilia.
