Default Collectibles? Why can't I go back and find them?

I pre-ordered Bionic Commando, but started today, due to being playing Mirror's Edge.
Anyway, I reached Ascention City and while I was progressing, I missed ONE collectible, because while I was searching for it, i moved to the end and it started loading...

I tried to go back, but with no luck. Does this mean that I have to restart the game from the beginning?

Why can't they do it like Resident Evil 5, where you can choose a level and try to search the collectibles? I mean, even the reminder that you CAN'T earn trophies or save the collectibles in Level Select is frustrating. Who have thought of this?

OK, i'm in the beginning of the game and I can restart it, but what happens if i miss one near the end of the game? Or what if I can't locate an item and i really want to progress the game. Why do they oblige me to "Find it now or do not progress" and keep searching and searching.

Usually, I prefer to play a walkthrough of a game, to get familiarised with it and then start searching around for collectibles...

Anyway, I do not expect GRIN to patch it, since it seems that this game is an economic failure, therefore they won't assign sources to it, (Hell, even when they sold 100,000+ downloadable copies of BC:R, they didn't assign people for the trophy patch), but it ruins the whole search for items later idea...

And now, for something completely different...

By the way, in my humble opinion, BC:R sold THAT much, because they promised trophies when only a handful of games had them last August. People were curious about trophies, so they bought it. I bought it also for trophies, but it was a fantastic game...

Of course 9 months later we heard GRIN saying that they won't patch BC:R. Frankly, i don't care anymore, but for me they earned 1.000.000+ dollars for just selling something which they didn't deliver (trophies).

Either people admit it or not, most of the sales were from hungry trophy whores at that time, so most of them feel that they were defrauded

OK, seriously...

I'm 33 years old and I have being playing videogames for about 20-25 years.
I have played games with various levels of frustration, but now I'm writing this post after having spent the last 45 minutes trying to get a collectable (!) since I cannot progress the game if I don't get it. After collecting it twice, after the PERFECT swing (you need to swing from some flying mines to get it, after you recall the Death From Above abilty) I fell to my death and had to get it again.

I'm really patient player (since I have platinumed games like Wipeout HD, Mirror's Edge, Killzone 2, etc), but most of the frustration comes from not the actual gameplay, but the design choices, which honestly i cannot fathom.

1) Poor, poor checkpoints.
2) The ability NOT to have manual saves.
3) Re-do already completed challenges and re-collect collectibles if you die!
4) Miss a collectable and you cannot return to find it, even with "level select"

And paaaleaassee don't tell me you want to capture an arcade essence in this game, which these design choices mimick the status quo of 20 years ago "rules" of how a game is supposed to be. Probably you had to collect the collectables again in an old game, due to technical or programming limitations of the time.

Anyway, this is probably the 1st time I have been SO much frustrated for a game for reasons apart from its difficulty and it saddens me to see games like these to become epic failures due to these reasons...

Oh, and I'm pretty sure that this thread is going to be a monologue, since noone will bother to answer....

I dunno man I got 100% collectibles on my first run back in May...just make sure you get all of them before you reach the final checkpoint...and you get to keep any collectible that you get up to a savepoint so if you die after that point you keep them

I found the best approach to just not worry too much with the collectibles during the initial playthrough.

Seems like the "approach" people have favored is:

1st: Play through the game on Normal
2nd: Play through on Hard while getting all collectibles/challenges
3rd: Play through on Commando while rocking the socks off of the entire world

Some also went Commando first and then back to Normal or Hard for the collectibles (I did). Some also just seemed to get everything in one go (Swingin' must've felt reaaal good for these guys)

I didn't really have many problems in the game with get the collectibles (actually, the worst ones for me were the ones that were right up under the ceiling, like in the greenhouse area, under one of the bridges near a relay, or in one of the tunnels, right up under the ceiling... some tiny moments of frustration getting the perfect "touch" going there. And, oh, I recall there being a really tricky *spoiler*UNDER WATER*spoiler* one in Trent or something)

I know which one you're talking about, though. (right after the DFA spot, when you return after disabling the mines and stuff). Maybe I just had the swinging nailed okay-ishly already by then or something as I didn't really have much of a problem with it.

On a slightly unrelated note, though, to just mention something from your initial post (concerning the BC:R PS3 Trophies and stuff)
-Dunno if you follow the PlayStation Blog, Capcom Unity or different posts around here, but; Rearmed is now getting a Title Update, which will include Trophies + more

Default My last whining post (hopefully)

I REALLY REALLY like the swing mecahnic, now that I'm getting used to it and I REALLY, REALLY trying to justify their choices, but few minutes ago I just snapped.

I was at the Trent Disctict Area 3. I began as normal, I was playing for about 15-20 minutes trying to get that 4th collectable and then enter in the building. I clear the building, having done 14 headshots up to there, plus Death From Above, plus the Melee challenge. I get out, find something on a roof and then viewing a cutscene. I gain control and while trying to jump across I fall to my death...

I said OK, the cutscene was few moments ago, but NOOOOOO. I have to start the whole level again!

So, one tiny mistep cancels:

1) 14 headshots that lead to a complete challenge Headshot Bonanza
2) The Melee Challenge
3) Death From Above
4) Some kills with the Hiker weapon
5) 5/8 collectables

So, trying to do the same things again for 15-20 minutes it's plain frustrating for me. I work all day and I need to have fun and have the feeling of progression while playing a game, not taking back that much.

If the game punishes you THAT much in Normal difficulty and cancels out THAT much of a progress then I don't know what it's goint to happen in the Commando difficulty.

My frustration stems from the fact that the gameplay is perfect and I was waiting a long time for this game. I really liked the BCR (even though I bought it for trophies) and I was eager for this release.

In my humble opinion, they need to patch the game, since I haven't found a single person that actually prefers this punishment than from the normal do-the-challenge and even if you die, you still have the challenge cleared (same things for collectables).

Most people just trying to overcome that problem and just learn to live with it along the game.
I will probably do the same thing and Platinum it, but this is because of my ancient need of wanting to 100% the games I play. (Even before trophy system)

I still say in the forums and PSN friends that ask me that it;s a GOOD game and they should buy it, but I really hoped that there was more than a guy who loved Bionic Commando when he was 15 (I'm referring to Ben obviously) to develop the game. He designed a great mechanic, only to see it fall victim to its rules...

I will not post again my frustration, since it doesn't offer anything constructive anymore. I made my remarks and I really hope that the designers and developers of the game heed to what their gameres/fans say to them.

I'll go now and play again Bionic Commando as I really try to enjoy it! (If i didn't ike the game, I would have just trade it back, but it's because I like it that I rant that much.)

@Carnivol: Thank you for replying to me. I have seen the playstation blog and whilst it's a good thing, it doesn't matter anymore. I have played the game and done everything except for Super-Hard, which with my mood now, I don't want to play it again for few years!

Also, there is no chance to play in a harder difficulty than Normal and trying to get collectables! I really don't want to play a game and consume Valium so as not to send flying DS3s to the wall!

Maybe they should unlock the Level Select option to do all those things that ironically don't let you?

Anyway, If I'm the minority then so be it...

And again thank you for your response.

Aris

I'm pretty sure that when BC:R was released, it was not promised trophies at that time. It was only later on afterwards that they got in trouble with promises.

Commando difficulty only makes the enemies more difficult, the rules of the game do not change.

The reason I can see people needing to survive after getting a collectible is because otherwise people would just suicide for some of the more difficult ones.

The problems would be fixed with more frequent checkpoints, or a quicksave, IMO.

There were a few times that I was pretty annoyed when playing the game, but to me collectibles/completionist wasn't the point of my first playthrough. I wanted to beat the game; if I wanted to 100% it I could go back later and do it (and I did).

Thank you for the link, even though I'm aware of it!

Also, I do agree with you that more frequent checkpoints would sooth the pain of dying.
Also, an auto-save whenever you complete a challenge would suffice. This one hurts me the most. Having completed several challenges only to die and lose them all. The collectables still difficult, but I think i could manage it if at least have saved all the other progress. (Kills, challenges, etc.)

By the way, BCR was announced to have trophies, but after release with a patch...

Thumbs down Same problem

This is bullshit. I missed ONE FUCKING collectable and now to get it i have to start the whole game over again. So much for my platinum trophy...
I can probably think of 50 things to make this game A LOT better. When i first hear that Grin "died", i was like why?
Now i know.
Fuck this game
It's good for a first playthrough to piss around, but then you might as well sell it.
Hopefully when/if there's a next bionic commando(because of the hint at the end of the game), the developers won't be a bunch of retards.

I love rearmed.
But it looks like grin can't make a good game with their own ideas.

Last I checked, the point of the first playthrough is to show you can beat it, worry about 100% later when you get more experienced at it.
